Te Kooti: Voices of the iwi
The symposium explores the legacy of Te Kooti Rikirangi from the perspective of those iwi who maintained a close and intimate relationship with him and his faith Te Haahi Ringatu, despite his vilification and pursuit by colonial forces. Those iwi who harbored and/or allowed passage through their tribal lands to Te Kooti often suffered greatly because of their support. However, relationships have endured over time and this symposium provides a forum for the voices of iwi to be heard after generations of silence.
We are pleased to have speakers providing perspectives from a number of iwi including:
- Tūhoe - Dr Taiarahia Black (Tūhoe)
- Whakatōhea - Kahautu Maxwell
- Te Whānau-ā-Apanui - Rikirangi Gage
- Tūwharetoa - Te Ngaehe Wanikau
- Ngāti Maniapoto Kingitanga – Dr Tom Roa
- Ngāti Awa – Judge Layne Harvey
